Answer engine optimization: getting your venue named in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode

How AI assistants pick the venues and restaurants they recommend, and the pages, profile and review work that gets your business into those answers.

Luke Del Priore explaining venue marketing under a neon sign in the studio

The short version

  • 45% of consumers used ChatGPT or another AI tool for local recommendations in BrightLocal’s 2026 survey, up from 6% a year earlier.
  • AI answers draw on what the web already says about you: business websites were 42% of the sources cited for local businesses, and Google Business Profiles 28.6%.
  • The answers change from one asking to the next, so being named once proves little. Check the same questions every month and count how often you appear.
  • Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO: no special files or markup. The work is complete, specific pages, a full profile, reviews, and a place on the lists that recommend businesses like yours.

A couple types “wedding venues near Asheville for 150 guests with a covered ceremony space” into ChatGPT. A host asks Google’s AI Mode for “a restaurant in Hoboken with a private room for 20”. A company planner asks for “a golf club near Philadelphia for a 100-person outing”. Each answer names three or four businesses and says why. Answer engine optimization is the work of being one of them, and being described correctly when you are. This guide covers how those answers are built and what puts a venue, restaurant or club into them.

How many people now ask AI

The change happened fast. In BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of US consumers, 45% had used ChatGPT or another AI tool to find local recommendations, against 6% a year earlier. Pew found the share of US adults who have used ChatGPT at all rose from 18% in 2023 to 44% in 2026.

The scale of AI search, 2026

The questions are also longer than searches used to be. Alphabet said in October 2026 that AI Mode questions are on average three times longer than traditional searches. That suits a venue or restaurant with a specific answer: a guest count, a room size, a price range, a style.

What answer engine optimization is

SEO tries to rank a page in a list of results. Answer engine optimization tries to get your business named in the answer above or instead of that list, and described the way you would describe it. In practice the two share most of their work. Google’s own guidance for site owners says that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, and that no special files or markup are needed. What changes is the target: a page can rank tenth and still be the source an answer quotes, if it states the facts the question asked for.

Where AI answers get their facts

AI assistants assemble their recommendations from what is already published about you. When BrightLocal studied about 200,000 local prompts across Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, business websites were the source cited most, followed by Google Business Profiles and Yelp.

Sources AI answers cited for local businesses
  • Business websites42%
  • Google Business Profiles28.6%
  • Yelp9.5%
  • Tripadvisor1.8%
  • OpenTable1.2%

Local search experts see the same pattern. In Whitespark’s 2026 survey, the website’s own pages weighed most for AI search visibility, then reviews, and the single strongest factor was being on expert-curated “best of” lists: the local magazine’s best wedding venues, the city guide’s best private dining rooms.

Answers change every time you ask

Ask an AI assistant the same question twice and you may get a different list. BrightLocal found that when the same local search was run again, only 21% to 33% of the businesses named overlapped. Each answer also names few businesses: about four in ChatGPT, three and a half in AI Mode, two and a half in AI Overviews.

  • Google Maps66%
  • AI Overviews38%
  • ChatGPT33%
  • AI Mode32%

Two things follow. Maps is still where a local business shows up most reliably, so the Business Profile work comes first. And a single screenshot of your venue in a ChatGPT answer proves little; what counts is how often you are named across many askings of the questions your customers actually ask.

Fewer clicks, so the answer has to sell you

When an answer is on the page, fewer people click through. Pew tracked real browsing and found that when a Google AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, against 15% when there was none; only 1% clicked a link inside the summary. Ahrefs found AI Overviews go with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page.

For a venue or restaurant that means the answer itself is your first impression. If it says you seat 180, have a covered ceremony site and start at a certain price, a couple can decide to inquire without ever reading your home page. If those facts are missing or wrong, the answer recommends someone else.

The checklist for venues and restaurants

  • State the facts people ask about, in words. Seated and standing capacity, each space, the style, the season, a starting price or range, what the fee includes, parking, the rain plan. For restaurants: private room sizes, menus as text, hours, reservations.
  • Write a page for each question worth winning. Each event type, each space, each town you draw from. Long, specific questions match long, specific pages.
  • Answer real questions in plain text. A visible FAQ with direct answers, taken from what couples and guests ask you on tours and calls.
  • Complete the Google Business Profile and keep it current: category, attributes, hours, photos, menu, booking links.
  • Make the other listings match. Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable for restaurants; the wedding sites for venues; the same name, address, phone and details everywhere.
  • Get on the lists. Local magazine and blog roundups, city guides, “best of” articles. Pitch them, and make sure they describe you correctly.
  • Keep reviews coming, and reply to them. Reviews are the second strongest signal for AI visibility, and recent ones matter most.
  • Skip the shortcuts. Google says no special AI files or markup are needed for its AI features, so an llms.txt file or an “AI schema” is not the way in.

How to tell if it is working

Make a list of ten to twenty questions in your customers’ words, with your town, your guest counts and your event types. Ask each one in ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode every month, several times, and record how often you are named and what is said about you. Then watch the visits referred by AI assistants in your analytics. That is the check we run each month, and two venues’ results from it look like this:

From client reports
  • 90visits from AI assistants such as ChatGPT to Larkfield, East Northport, NY, June 23 to September 20, 2026Google Analytics
  • 6 of 7core searches where Google AI Mode recommended a Denver event venue, first for two of them, October 2026DPH monthly AI check

Our wedding venue SEO includes this monthly check, and every case study lists the prompts where the venue now appears.

Questions owners ask

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in search results. Answer engine optimization aims to have your business named, and described correctly, in the answers that ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode give. The work overlaps heavily, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.

How do I get my venue or restaurant recommended by ChatGPT?

Give it facts to repeat: pages that state your capacity, style, price range, location and what is included; a complete Google Business Profile and accurate listings on sites like Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable; steady reviews; and mentions on local best-of lists and guides.

Do I need special schema or an llms.txt file?

No. Google’s guidance for site owners says no special markup or AI files are needed for its AI features. Standard structured data that matches what is on the page is still worth having.

How do I check whether AI assistants recommend my business?

Write down the questions your customers ask, for example “wedding venue near Lancaster for 150 guests”, and ask them in ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode each month. Because answers vary between runs, ask each one several times and record how often you are named. Your analytics will also show visits referred by AI assistants.

Will AI replace SEO?

Not for local businesses yet. In BrightLocal’s 2026 study, Google Maps still showed a given business in 66% of searches, against 33% for ChatGPT. The same pages, profile and reviews feed both, so the work serves both.
